Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership

Research into leavers from the health and care workforce

This project was aimed at understanding more about staff members who were leaving the health and care workforce in Greater Manchester. The main focus of the research was data from the NHS and from a survey of care providers in Bolton and Manchester, combined with data from the Adult Social Care Workforce Data Set (ASC-WDS) from Skills for Care. Face to face meetings were held with providers in Bolton to introduce the project and encourage completion of the survey.

The final report identified the numbers of people leaving the health and care workforce, the reasons they were leaving and where they were going to. Although a significant proportion of leavers remained in the health and care sector, there was a loss of social care staff to the NHS. Although pay played a role in this, other factors affecting job satisfaction were important, particularly for the NHS.

The report outlined a set of actions available to health and care employers to tackle the loss of staff.
